Meredith Aitken’s work draws upon the environment in a fragmented way, documenting the subtle shifts in light and colour which define a place. As soon as a painting is finished, there is a disconnect from the place and time of its origin. It becomes something new in itself, separate in both time and space. Something is captured in time, yet the work still has the subtle hint of inevitable erosion and change.
Meredith lives in Vancouver BC and work in oils, acrylics and mixed media, combining painting, collage and printmaking techniques. She studied painting at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and holds degrees in earth science. Meredith has shown her work in Canada and the United States. Recent exhibitions include Of Other Spaces: Colour, Light and Place at the Richmond City Hall Galleria; MIXX at the Emily Carr Concourse Gallery; Breaking Ground at the Britannia Mining Museum; Concinnity at the Britannia Art Gallery; Massively SMALL at J GO Gallery in Park City, UT; Discovery: Air at the Seymour Art Gallery; Water Works at the Vancouver Maritime Museum; and the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Gala Exhibitions at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. In January 2014, Meredith received the Carole Badgley Emerging Artist Award from the Seymour Art Gallery, BC.
